I still need to do some tweaking... but they are at least developing now. I don't seem to have much highlight... they seem very gray to me. I'm playing with the exposure time to see if that helps. If not, (and I'm thinking not) I'll have to tweak the curves some more. Any advice is welcome, as usual. I finally gave up on the blacklight... I just don't get any results. My theory (as flawed as it might be) is that the UV just isn't strong enough to penetrate the emulsion like it should. So, even though it appears to have exposed... it's not really. Just my theory.

Blake, thanks for all your help. I've resigned myself for waiting for sunny days... Even with the curves and aluminum foil, the blacklights just weren't cutting it. They would appear to be overexposed until i went to rinse... then all the emulsion would wash away. Luckily, the sun came out while I was working one day and that seemed to get the results I was expecting. It still needs some tweaking, but at least now I know not to waste my time with the blacklights.

thanks!!

I've got to do one thing before I run over to the studio... it might make it a little closer to 6-- depending on how bad traffic is on the way over. give me a call if this is an issue. 864-230-1669

I'm working tomorrow until 5:15. I can swing by artbomb afterwards and meet you if that will work with your schedule. I've been doing this at home-- easier to keep things clean there. I'll bring my negatives w/ me. I don't remember you sending me any curves. If you did, I've forgotten AND lost it. Maybe that's the problem.

Even with the different paper (I got 2 sheets of Arches and tore them down), the blacklights are taking at least an hour exposure... and the emulsion is still washing away. Even with no agitation. Perhaps I just need good old fashioned sunlight? Any ideas?

cool. I'll go get some different paper today. I just grabbed a sampler pack thinking I could figure out which kind I liked best... guess not! As for contact frame (i'm so so so ghetto-rigging this) I'm using a pane of glass on top of a piece of stiff cardboard. Nice, huh? It works, even if it's not the best. I'll take whatever handouts you got.

Question: I think I told you I'm printing "negatives" on transparencies for these... do you think the transparencies got printed too heavily? I noticed on two there were areas that did seem to work around the edges.

I'm having cyanotype issues... The black lights seem to be working, but require a super long exposure. last night I tried one for an hour long exposure, which seemed to work beautifully until I went to rinse and fix... all of the emulsion washed off. This is what was happening before, only I thought I had mixed my stock solutions incorrectly. Am I using the wrong paper? (currently using watercolor paper- Strathmore) Applying incorrectly?

Here are 2 recipes modified from Val Cushing book for the materials we have on hand. Recipe 1. Cone 6 White (Porcelain type): Grolleg 10%, #6 Tile 15%, Tenn Ball 25%, F-4 Spar 30%, Frit 3124 4%, Flint 16%, Macaloid 2%. Recipe 2. Tenn Ball 20%, #6 Tile 20%, Foundry Hill Cream 20%, Hawthorn Bond 20%, F-4 Spar 20%, Talc 10%. The student who tried these like the second recipe better PLUS it has cheaper materials cost-wise. see what you think....
