Some panels are fantastic and some are not. If you go to the conference, I would try to do something like the portfolio review -- take advantage of being there. The panels are probably the most informative aspect of the conference if you hit the b...

Hey Mary Pat -- many residencies are welcoming to newly minted MFA graduates. Your paintings are great -- you should definitely apply with what you have!
I didn't get a copy of my interview with Ms. Tran and I kind of hope it's not floating around there. I believe I was squirming around and looking uncomfortable.

Mary Pat, I have those paintings from the closet. I got them this morning, it just seemed wrong for them to be in a closet. I know Elizabeth is still in town, just let her know I have them so I can get them to her. My email is chumphr@clemson.edu . Good seeing you back in Clemson.

Thanks for the Dion info. I am familiar with some aspects of how he contextualizes his "collections" but this sounds really interesting. I'll check it out...Thanks for thinking of me. Hope you are well and adjusting to life after grad school..

About Me:
Things I have been doing in the last couple of years:

Lately, I spend much more time teaching than I do painting. This really bothers me, and I am going to try evening out the playing field a little more.

I am adjunct professor for Drawing I, 2D Foundations (B/W), Painting I, and Art Appreciation Lecture at Lipscomb University and Printmaking I, Drawing I and III, 2D Foundations (Color Theory), Painting III and IV at Belmont University.

Random things with the Frist Center for Visual Arts:
1) was recorded in dialogue with curator Mark Scala for a podcast that will be played on museum headphones (in conjunction with the Chuck Close exhibition)
2) exhibiting some of my student work on their walls
3) In August, I will be giving two printmaking workshops

I like to read a lot, and even write a little. I have just bought a great issue (#84) of Adbusters: Journal of the Mental Environment. It covers "Pop Nihilism: Advertising Eating Itself" and "The Spirit of Revolt" as its key themes. Please drop me any names of things I should read.

I am also volunteering at a place called "Saddle Up!," which is an organization dedicated to teaching kids with disabilities how to ride horses. It is probably the most amazing part of my life right now. Everyone is passionate about the work they are doing there, and I find the quiet of the farm and the physicality of the horses really settling. It makes it easier to paint.

Brian and I like to take advantage of all the cheap/free events that are available in Nashville, and then spend our money on really good fish, olives, and cheese at Whole Foods. Surprisingly, there is always something cultural and interesting to do around here, but it is still not "home." I am not impressed with the gallery scene either. We're thinking of trying out Chicago in the next year or two.
While at Clemson my major was:
Master of Fine Arts

I think that this is a great comment on a huge chunk of contemporary art

Contemporary art is all about the sublime, it’s about the failure of representation – what can’t be represented. The notion of the sublime is about pointing to that absence. Making the viewer feel what they cannot perceive, feel the limit of perception.

Thu Tran - Food Party

Food as Medium: Cooking Up Visual Delights with Artist Thu Tran
10:36 am Monday Jun 8, 2009
by Ali Gitlow

Mixed media artist Thu Tran is truly a Martha Stewart for the 21st century (not to dis Martha, but the prototype’s in dire need of an update). Like Pee-wee Herman before her, the pint-sized hostess of Food Party — a whacked out hybrid cooking/puppetry show premiering on IFC tomorrow night at 11:15 p.m. — orbits an über-eccentric fantasy land. Past web episodes have found Tran crafting a Che… Continue
