I love this -- it's unsettling and so complex, full of moments and shifts. Worth the year + of work!

Thanks, E.
I think it's interesting to just see how we and our work respond to changes and transitions in our lives.
Good luck with the start of school, prof!

Elizabeth, how are you liking MO? I hope you're doing well, adjusting and having fun. the baby paintings are weird, in a "humm, let me look closer" kind of way. how big are they? I hesitate to say more until I look at them a bit longer.
Clemson is starting up tomorrow and I'm ready for it. summer was good, but that was then...

Ok, so this is probably going to need a phone conversation to clarify - and keep in mind I am looking at your work on a crappy computer with a glare. But, here is my two cents and you can see if it is worth anything. I think that it is a very important step that you are allowing yourself to loosen up and play on a number of levels. That being said, there is a key element missing from the new guys that makes them "you," and in my opinion, truly interesting. The first baby more finely rides a line between abstraction and representation, psychological interplays resulting from the ambiguous, maybe violent figure/ground relationship, with such an odd, almost pleasant color play. It's just so fleshy and so flat at the same time! Ripping and yet building, there is some sort of action taking place - and I am not sure it is about the form of a figure, and not the form of the internal figure. Whereas, the other paintings feel closer to gestural studies, are informed less by spatial and color tensions, and are almost completely missing the "illusion of physicality" that you do so well. Anyway, my parents are rushing me off to dinner. But, I am pumped for you, and really think these recent ones may be essential to continue as a supplement, so that you can keep your energy up, with quick bursts of investment, and then you can cash in on all the glories you discover. I love working that way. My god, I miss painting. I have a feeling June is going to see a lot of action.

You should post the scary baby painting, I want to look at it somemore!

So, apparently I am scheduled for three pre-wedding parties, one of which is two days before the wedding and you and Stoneking need to be there girly-o! But, if you miss that there is always the after wedding lunch at my parents house on Sunday. And then I am off to see some Mayan temples, swim in underground rivers, and drink many a pina colada. It was just so grand boating with you this week, and I keep imagining hanging your painting in the house in Nashville...I miss you.
