What a fantastic essay! Can't wait to see the work you did while you were there. (And, by the way, I like to squint at the giant, tangled beast and poke it in the belly.)

A comparision is in order

I'm not sorry about this sudden flood of blogs. Italy has been hovering over me and so while sitting at home, bored and alone, this is an opportune time for me to type my fingers off. There is one detail that bothers me though--I'm sitting here, bored and alone, not in South Carolina or even in the United States. No, I'm in South Korea, half a world away.

Why is it that Italy, not Korea has captured my fascination? I've been to Italy once, to Korea, at least 8 times. There are many similarities… Continue

Florence and Venice

Next on the list were Florence and Venice.

Florence was my favorite city--probably based on the merit of its art alone. Like Rome, Florence was a bustling city filled with tourists; like Orvieto, the people were kinder. It is unmatched in art. Just as Rome is excessively proud of its great monuments, Florence is equally proud in its role as host to the Renaissance. Our hotel was right next to the central mercato and the Medici Chapel. Several streets down could be found Florence's Duomo, Baptis… Continue

Recollections of Rome and Orvieto

Even though Italy has a strong national identity, it's smaller regions posses very strong personalities of their own (if you know anything about Italian history, this is an obvious statement). All the cities we traveled to--Rome, Orvieto, Perugia, Bolsena, Assisi, Civita, Florence, and Venice leave very different aftertastes in my mind. Here, I'll try to describe each city without sounding like Todd's guidebook by Rick Steve.

Indomitable Rome. Once the center of all civilization, Rome still wea… Continue

Viva Italia

It's almost been a month now since my return from my study abroad trip in Italy. What a trip.

Italy leaves you feeling breathless. The country will swallow you up instantly and easily accepts you into its crowds of international tourists, immigrants, and of course, proud Italians. Which group you wish to fall into is entirely up to you. Spending only a brief month there left me feeling cheated. The idea of appreciating Italy as it should be in only a month is laughable. I've been shown the prom… Continue

I spent the fall of 2001 in Italy and I think of it daily. My nightly ritual is reading through my old art history texts with the hope of finding some printed image that will rekindle a latent memory. If you are cut from the same cloth as I am the experience will never leave you.
